| About Isabela Island (Albermarle) |
Isabela Island was named in honor of Queen Isabel from Spain, who sponsored the voyage of Columbus. By the English, the island was named after the Duke of Albemarle. With an area of 4,640 km², Isabela Island is the largest of the archipelago. Its highest point is Wolf Volcano with an altitude of 1,707 m. (5,600 ft). Puerto Villamil town, located at the south-eastern tip of Isabela Island, holds the third-largest human settlement of the Galapagos Islands. The seahorse shape of Isabela Island's is the product of the merging of six large volcanoes into a single landmass. Sierra Negra Volcano at Isabela Island is the second largest active caldera on earth (30 square mile crater).
